We’ve got to have an enough
“Growth is one of the stupidest purposes ever invented by any culture. Growth of what, and why, and for whom, and who pays the cost, and how long can it last.
We’ve got to have an enough.”
These comments were made by Donella Meadows’ over 40 years ago. They are cited in Kate Raworth’s radical 2017 book Doughnut Economics which advocates for an alternative economic model. A model that moves us away from chasing profit, to creating purpose; from creating growth to driving impact.
Doughnut Economics questions the 20th century economic assumptions, models and theories that underpin our incessant drive for growth. Most importantly, it provides a model that creates a sweet spot for humanity where the needs of all are met within the means of the planet.
At its heart Doughnut Economics looks to answer the question - what enables human beings to thrive?
So if you have ever wondered where those GDP growth graphs end this is the book for you
